A dog's life

First listening impression: Laurie Anderson does what she always did best: She's telling stories.

Heart of a Dog is the soundtrack of her film of the same name, co-produced by HBO and German-French TV station Arte, that currently appeared in selected movie theaters in the U.S.

Lolabelle, Laurie Anderson's late piano-playing rat terrier, is the main subject. Along this leitmotif the artist meditates in 27 predominantly short tracks on 9-11 (as many Americans, Laurie is still not through with it), her mother's passing, current political topics, everyday absurdities -- birth, death and everything between.

There are only few sung tunes on this record, but a lot of words, spoken over musical backgrounds, sound collages and original soundbites. The soundtrack contains excerpts from Laurie Anderson's earlier stage performance Homeland, from her albums Bright Red and Life on a String, as well as from Landfall, her collaboration with Kronos Quartet. Some of the tracks seem to be live recordings.

The last word has Lou Reed, to whose "magnificent spirit" this record is dedicated.

Late night music, for listening.
