1-A Düsseldorf: Uraan

(Scroll down for English version)

A new record by 1-A Düsseldorf after 13 years, it's their sixth.

1-A Düsseldorf—originally founded by Thomas Dinger as a way to pursue his own ideas independently of his highly dominant brother, Klaus—now consists, following Thomas’s passing, of a core group comprising former Beuys student Nils Kristiansen (guitar, vocals), Thomas’s cousin Dirk Flader (guitar and bass; who was also involved in Klaus’s project La!Neu?), and Steffen Domnisch (drums, keyboards). They are joined by guests including Viktoria Wehrmeister (vocals), Attila Mihci (vocals, guitar), Francisco Cabañas Gac (vocals), Jule Rössler (vocals), and Schoeleh Djannessari (female vocals and a 1920s Tyson guitar). Former Can vocalist Damo Suzuki, after many years, gave his consent for the release of several session recordings dating from 1985 to 1994; he can now be heard on two tracks here (“Schwermental” and “Brainshake”). And yes—his voice is unmistakable.

The cover lists nine tracks, actually there are ten; the hidden track, entitled "The Tyson Finish" is one of the best of the album -- it could easily be a parody on the Euro Disco wave of the nineties, but it is finished much better. Except this one, my recommendations for a start are the rather compact "1941 WLDR" and the 13-minute trip "Herr Khan".

The whole album is quite multifaceted, has a sound one associates with Düsseldorf immediately and is very worth a listen. 1-A Düsseldorf never try to follow any trends or to fulfill expectations. They do what they want to do. This doesen't work equally well in all tracks, but there are no misses. The band was able to do it this way because the first print run of the album was limited to only 150 copies, so nobody could make much money with it anyway. This independency paid off musically.
